Course Objectives This course aims at equipping students with competence in technologies used in translation and translation research and having them practice the use of these technologies on a scientific basis. • Teaching the use of programs such as Abby, MemoQ, Memsource, Trados, Smartcat, Matecat at a basic level.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • overview of the history of localization and machine translation;
  • evaluate the developments in the technological field;
  • use technology effectively in translation studies;
  • learn to use translation memories;
  • define main components of machine translation;
  • translate the translation of different types of texts into Turkish with the help of the previously introduced translation program;
  • compare traditional translation with computer-assisted translation;
  • discuss the types and differences of computer-assisted translation programmes (i.e. MemoQ,Memsource,Smartcat,Matecat etc);
  • evaluate the functionality of the translation programs used in the translations made;
  • put into practice the theoretical information on the use of technology in translation process and automatic translation;
  • use existing corpora or corpora compiled by themselves in the translation process;
  • read and discuss the resources presented;
  • discuss the features and differences of translation practices (texts) conducted by students;
  • conduct individual translation studies in laboratory environment;
  • define and classify localization process and types.
Course Description This course deals with existing technologies used in translation and translation research. In this course, students will learn theoretical information and do practices in line with what they learnt in a laboratory equipped with relevant technologies.
