E-BOOK TO BRING INNOVATION TO THE WORLD OF TRANSLATION
Mehmet Şahin, associate professor of English Translation and Interpreting at Izmir University of Economics (IUE), is preparing an e-book full of animations, visuals, videos with the intent of allowing translation and interpretation students to receive education based on equal opportunity. The “Computer-Assisted Translation” titled e-book, developed as part of TUBITAK 5000- Digital Content Open Course Resources Support Program, will be accessible via smart devices and computers.
Dr. Şahin stated that he published the first book in the field of translation technologies in Turkey under the title of ‘Çeviri ve Teknoloji’ (Translation and Technology) in 2013 and that, he aimed to support higher education students studying translation and interpretation. He said that he wanted to support translation and technology studies in Turkey via TUBITAK’s call to increase Turkish copyright resources. “7 applications are being supported across Turkey in accordance with TUBITAK call. I am one of those seven applicants. Thanks to this support, I am able to prepare an e-book enriched with animations, visuals, and videos. I also get help from Biblioteknik Dijital Yayıncılık Hizmetleri ve Teknolojileri Ltd. Şti. (Digital publishing house company) in preparation of interactive components of my book. The book will be in EPUB3 format, an e-book file format with the extension .epub that can be downloaded and read on devices like smartphones, tablets, computers, or e-readers that is published by the International Digital Publishing Forum. This way, it will be available for public access,” said Dr. Şahin.
‘Outcome of a 10-Year Experience’
The book will have 15 chapters with Q&A at the end of each chapter, reported Assoc. Prof. Dr. Şahin and said that he was preparing a presentation file for each chapter as well. He also said that the book would allow Computer-Assisted Translation course to be taught at departments of translation and interpretation, and translation studies as part of a common plan of instruction. Dr. Şahin stated the following:
“E-book addresses technology, a subject which is increasingly developing in the fields of translation and interpretation, and translation studies, and affecting the translation practices, instruction, and research. New technologies and tools changed the existing applications, created new demands, and therefore affected the translator profile. Number of courses regarding these fields is increasing. There is hardly any academic study on translation and technology written in Turkish. Computer-Assisted Translation e-book, available in electronic environment and enriched with animations and videos, will act as a primary resource book regarding this topic. This e-book, supported with audio-visual components, will allow students to practice both by using the existing internet resources and by downloading the trial versions of tools promoted in the book. I have been teaching the Computer-Assisted Translation Studies course at IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting for almost 10 years. I have designed this course and developed it over the years. It is going to be an honor for me to share this 10-year experience with all academicians and students in Turkey.”
