Within the framework of International Translation Day (September 30th), the Department of English Translation and Interpreting at Izmir University of Economics hosted Cansu Canseven, the editor-in-chief of Düşbaz Kitaplar. During her talk, Canseven introduced her book, "Editing: A Tough Craft - Interviews with Editors," and discussed the role of editors in the publishing world in Turkey.
The event began with an opening speech by Prof. Neslihan Yetkiner, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and one of our department's esteemed faculty members, who shared the 20-year history of our department. Following the Dean's speech, our Department Head, Prof. Nihal Yetkin Karakoç gave a talk on the significance of International Translation Day, emphasizing that translation is an art that must be preserved. Later, our alumni, who have advanced their careers in various fields, shared their experiences with the attending students.
In the main part of the event, our guest Cansu Canseven began by discussing the process behind the creation of her book "The Tough Craft of Editing: Interviews with Editors," and as she introduced the editors she interviewed, she emphasized that these discussions offered valuable insights into the publishing world. She then shared her own experiences in the field, discussing the working dynamics between editors and translators. She gave valuable information about the crucial role editors play in shaping the final version of a book, their close collaboration with authors and translators, the meticulous attention they give to details, and how they tackle many challenges in the industry. Canseven also touched upon the topic of censorship, noting that editors and translators, as employees, sometimes do not have a say in decisions dictated by patronage.
Following the seminar, second-year English Translation and Interpreting student Özüm Irmak Türkeli delighted the guests with a piano recital. The event concluded with refreshments, as students and faculty had the opportunity to ask Canseven questions and learn from her experiences. The seminar sparked great interest, opening new perspectives on the publishing industry and the profession of editing.
