PANEL FOR ERGONOMICS OF TRANSLATION
The Panel for Ergonomics of Translation hosted by İzmir University of Economics English Translation and Interpreting Department provided an insight to the physical, cognitive and psychosocial ergonomics of translation. The panel started with the opening speeches of Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, Dean of IUE Faculty of Arts and Sciences and Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner, Head of English Translation and Interpreting Department, on ergonomics and the relation between translation and ergonomics.
Asst. Prof. Nevra Cem Ersoy from IUE Department of Psychology, evaluated the relation between stress and ergonomics in her speech titled “Psychosocial Risk Elements in Work”. By touching upon the relation between ergonomics and physiology, Asst. Prof. Şermin Tükel from Faculty of Health Sciences, highlighted the importance of posture and sitting posture in her speech titled “Physical Ergonomics: The Basic Rules of Healthy Desk Job”. Besides, physical-fitness exercises were integrated to the panel in order to raise awareness. Addressing the role of ergonomics of interpreting Özlem Çöllü, Founding Partner of Interas Translation, focused on the working conditions of conference interpreters. Then, Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu Yetkiner and Assoc. Prof. Mehmet Şahin from IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting shared their first findings obtained from their study conducted as a part of their joint course. Their study focuses on the psychosocial dimension of ergonomics and is based on a market conditions oriented project and field work.
The panel ended with the presentations of the students who shared their experience during the field work and the group project. Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu Yetkiner underlined that they would continue to focus on the relation between ergonomics and translation from other perspectives.
