“September 30th International Translation Day” was celebrated with an event organized by English Translation and Interpreting Department of Izmir University of Economics.
The ceremony started with the opening speech of Prof. Dr. İsmihan Bayramoğlu, the Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, focusing on translation in various languages and fields. This was followed by the speech delivered by Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner, Head of English Translation and Interpreting Department, touching on the origin and significance of International Translation Day. The ceremony continued with the reading of the declarations made by International Federation of Translators (FIT), Literary Translators Union (ÇEVBİR) and Directorate for Translation Coordination of Directorate for EU Affairs, and messages from our graduates studying abroad.
Sign Language Interpreter Okan Kurt of Provincial Directorate of Family and Social Policies delivered a seminar in which he shared his knowledge and experience in sign language interpreting. Kurt, addressed the history and the main features of sign language. Underlining that there is no common sign language system in the world, Kurt later introduced Turkish Sign Language through exercises. The guests and the students had the chance to develop awareness on sign language and sign language interpreting.
