“Re-translations, Re-contextualization, and Paratexts” Panel at IUE English Translation and Interpreting Department
Izmir University of Economics, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of English Translation and Interpreting organized an online panel titled "Re-translations, Re-contextualization, and Paratexts" on Monday, May 22nd, 2023. This panel was conducted as a part of the TUBITAK 1001 project led by Prof. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner, Head of Department of English Translation and Interpreting, Izmir University of Economics (IUE). The speakers at the event were Prof. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner and Asst. Prof. Ilgın Aktener, Assoc. Prof. Müge Işıklar Koçak from Dokuz Eylül University, and Asst. Prof. Selin Erkul Yağcı from Ege University.
The panel commenced with an opening speech by Prof. Kansu-Yetkiner, and continued with Asst. Prof. Selin Erkul Yağcı’s presentation titled "The Infinite Scope of Paratextual Universe within the Context of Harry Potter." Erkul Yağcı discussed the front cover images as paratexts in both the reprints of the Harry Potter series in their source culture and their translations in different target cultures. She also pointed out internet platforms such as "Pottermore" and "The Harry Potter Lexicon" that expand the Harry Potter universe in the context of transmedia story telling.
Next, Assoc. Prof. Müge Işıklar Koçak made a presentation titled "Analysis of Paratextual Materials in Intersemiotic Translations." Koçak discussed the visual paratexts in three different intersemiotic translations (cinematic adaptations) of Halide Edip Adıvar’s famous novel, Vurun Kahpeye.
Lastly, Prof. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner and Asst. Prof. Ilgın Aktener delivered their presentations titled "Re-contextualization and Paratexts in Modernist Novels: Preliminary Findings of a TUBITAK Project." Kansu-Yetkiner and Aktener discussed the analysis results of the project in which they examined the linguistic and visual peritexts in the 71 Turkish (re)translations of 14 controversial modernist novels.
The panel closed with a Q&A session, and the speakers answered the questions posed by the participants.
