Within the framework of International Translation Day, IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, hosted Olcay Mağden, Ayşegül Utku Günaydın and Güzin Öztürk from Tudem Publishing House.
Within the framework of International Translation Day (September 30th) IUE English Translation and Interpreting Department hosted a panel on “Translation of Children’s Literature.” The event had three valuable guests from Tudem, one of Turkey's most competent publishing houses in children's literature: Olcay Mağden (translator), Ayşegül Utku Günaydın (editor), and Güzin Öztürk (writer).
The event started with an opening speech delivered by Prof. Dr. Neslihan Kansu-Yetkiner, Head of English Translation and Interpreting Department, introducing the guests and theme of the event. Then, Assoc. Prof. Nihal Yetkin Karakoç delivered her speech on the origins and significance of World Translation Day. After the reading of the declaration made by Literary Translators Union (ÇEVBİR), former graduates of the department took stage and shared their career paths and experiences with the students.
During the panel, the panelists provided three different perspectives on Children’s literature as a translator, editor and writer. Güzin Öztürk, the award-winning author of Kuş olsam Evime Uçsam explained her research process before writing a book, and mentioned the issue of censure in children’s literature. Then, Olcay Mağden talked about the demands and challenges of translating children’s literature and underlined translators’ role in building bridges between cultures and expanding children’s intellectual capacity. Finally, Ayşegül Utku Günaydın, the editor of Tudem Publishing House explained the selection process for the books to be translated, and the translators to work on these books. During her talk, she also touched on several important issues, including the censure imposed on children’s books, the challenges of translating picture books, and the translation of children’s books from Turkish into different languages.
The panel ended with the Q&A session, and students had the opportunity to have one to one contact with prestigious professionals from the field.
