IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, hosted Esat Yılmaz, the founder of a localization company, in the webinar organized on April 12, 2023.
In his speech titled "Mechanics of Game Translation," Yılmaz first introduced the concept of “localization” and then shared his knowledge and experiences on translation/localization of console/PC games, which has become increasingly popular in the recent years and is an important field of work for translators.
Yılmaz, who has been working in the localization sector for a long time and has translated many popular video games such as Portal, Half-Life 2, PUBG MOBILE into Turkish, explained how the game localization sector that had emerged in the 1980s, has grown in numbers, especially during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Yılmaz gave advice to translator candidates who are interested in video game localization, saying that playing video games would not be enough to succeed in the field, and that they should also master CAT (computer-assisted translation) tools and have a visible profile on hiring platforms. In the last part of his speech, Yılmaz gave examples of how video game texts look on the translation interface, and stressed the importance of learning a programming language, even at a beginner level, for a game localizer.
The participants showed a great interest in the Q&A section of the webinar, and had the opportunity of one-to-one communication with an experienced professional in the field of console/PC game localization.
