IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting hosted Prof. Dr. Claudia V. Angelelli in the webinar titled "Community Interpreting: Practice and Ethics".
On Monday, March 25th, İzmir University of Economics Department of English Translation and Interpretation organized a webinar titled "Community Interpreting: Practice and Ethics". The topic of community interpreting was comprehensively addressed in the webinar, with Prof. Dr. Claudia V. Angelleli from Heriot-Watt University serving as the speaker.
Prof. Dr. Claudia V. Angelelli, who has had the opportunity to work in community interpreting both academically and practically, discussed the challenges encountered in the profession, based on her theoretical and practical knowledge acquired throughout her career. Emphasizing that community interpreting, which finds its place in various environments from hospitals to natural disaster sites, brings along many ethical issues, Prof. Dr. Claudia V. Angelelli shared examples of these issues synthesized with real-life experiences with the audience.
Stating that the world is becoming increasingly globalized day by day and that globalization brings different societies closer together, Angelelli noted that interpreters, in this context, take on roles not only as "language workers" but also as "mediators" and "negotiators". She expressed that the role of a mediator between two different cultures could become even more challenging in hospital settings, where interpreters serve individuals such as patients and healthcare professionals, due to the circumstances involved. Ethical problems in the translation process were examined from the perspectives of both the translator and the beneficiaries of the services, as community interpreting cannot be separated from social rights and services.
The event, which attracted the interest of many academics, students, and professional translators, concluded with a Q&A session for the participants.
