Within the framework of International Translation Day, IUE Department of English Translation and Interpreting, Faculty of Arts and Sciences, organized a panel titled "Current Approaches in Audiovisual Translation".
Within the framework of International Translation Day (September 30th), the Department of English Translation and Interpreting at Izmir University of Economics hosted a panel on "Current Approaches to Audiovisual Translation" on Friday, October 20, 2023. This event, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the department's establishment, featured speeches by a department faculty member and accomplished graduates in the field. The speakers in the panel were Lecturer Nilgün Dungan, who has successfully taught the audiovisual translation course in the department for many years; Deniz Fikirdanış, one of the department's 2019 graduates, who has advanced in this field and continues his career as an audiovisual translator; and Aslı Melike Soylu, also a graduate of the department, who has completed an internship in Dubbing Translation and currently works as a Research Assistant at Izmir University of Economics.
The event, which aimed to shed light on the field of audiovisual translation, began with an opening speech by Prof. Neslihan Kansu Yetkiner, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and a member of the department's academic staff. Prof. Yetkiner emphasized the contribution of departmental activities, especially this event, to the professional development of the students. Following the opening speech, Prof. Nihal Yetkin Karakoç, Head of the Department of English Translation and Interpreting, elaborated on the significance of audiovisual translation for both our department and the contemporary world of multimedia. Dr. Gülden Taner, a faculty member, delivered a speech on the significance and importance of International Translation Day. One of the most vibrant segments of the event followed these speeches when graduate students, who have advanced their careers in various fields, shared their experiences with the attending students through videos.
In the main part of the panel, Lecturer Nilgün Dungan emphasized that audiovisual translation goes beyond just subtitle and dubbing translation. She elaborated on the various sub-genres in this field, highlighting some essential considerations and the challenges commonly encountered and in audiovisual translation. Deniz Fikirdanış, a graduate who currently works as a translator for numerous digital platforms, discussed the expectations of digital platforms from translators, the general workflow, and the steps required to succeed in this field, particularly in subtitle translation. Finally, Research Assistant Aslı Melike Soylu started by discussing her dubbing translation training and went on to provide insights into the fundamentals of the job. She used examples to underscore the unique challenges and linguistic and ethical considerations in this type of translation.
The event concluded with a question-and-answer session, allowing students to engage with the speakers, graduates from the same department who set examples for them, and appreciate the privilege of taking the audiovisual translation course.
